While you are still in school, you are encouraged to do a lot of extra-curricular activities. Most of the time, you end up learning a skill or a talent. It could even be possible that you are now earning from the talent and skills you learned while at school.
Aside from the degree you obtained while at college, these activities have become your passion that people start to pay you because you have that talent and you want to share them.
But when found a job with a decent pay, you start to forget about your talent and focus on your career. While this is good since you are able to bring something home, your career may not advance as fast as you think. The skills that you have right now are just enough for an entry level employee. You can be left out for a promotion since you do not have the advance skills.
Do not give up yet, the adage “you cannot teach old dogs new tricks” are only for those who are unwilling to learn. There are ways you can learn new skills at work or find out that you are a natural in an added task.
Saying Yes to Assigned Tasks
You may be working on your regular job responsibilities, and out of the blue someone asked you to be the program manager or an event organizer. No matter how shy you are, never hesitate. Say “Yes” to additional tasks assigned to you.
Instead of running away, take it as a challenge and do the best that you could. The company chose you to do something out of your regular job description because they know you could do it. It is a chance to show what you can do and “learning by doing” could be your best bet to improve in your career by learning a new skill.
Taking Risks
A person who does not feel fear is someone who cannot learn new things. Get yourself challenged from time to time by doing things that are out of your range. These things or activities are not dangerous by actuality but they should be more than enough to get you uncomfortable. By facing your fears you are now getting yourself in new places and learn new things.
Do not just do anything risky. Make sure you know your threshold. Always do risky tasks because you know you can learn something from that task. Calculated risks should be practiced if you want to learn new things by being a little bit risky and adventurous for a while.
Get a Role Model
There are a lot people that you admire and you wish you could be in their shoes. Why not strive to be like your role model? Your admiration should not be only focused on what you know but also in striving to live your life like the person you admire.
It is not that you are tying to be the person you admire but you know their ways for success so use them to your advantage and slowly succeed in your career through new skills.
