How to Handle Increased Job Responsibility

The bad news of job termination is not only for those who were terminated. Those who are left behind will also have to face troubling times in the near future. Because more people are terminated, there are less people who will do certain tasks.

You may be keeping your job right now but your job responsibility is practically increasing everyday since no one else will do those tasks. Before you know it, you will be overwhelmed with job responsibilities.

If you don’t do something about this trend, you could end up terminated because you can’t do your task. You might even resign from work since you can’t handle the job responsibilities.

When you feel your job responsibility is increasing, here are some ideas on how to deal with it with grace and with the expected productivity.

• Be Clear on Responsibilities

The first thing you should take care of is to know what is exactly expected from you. Because of the frantic pace in the office today, you might find yourself being asked for an output that you are not aware of. Every week, clear up your job responsibility with your boss or supervisor if you think something has happened in your office. When you office is revamped, don’t expect that your entry level position will go untouched. Be updated so that you’ll know what to do and not be surprised with demands.

• Organize

The only way to deal with hectic responsibilities is to know what to do and when to do it. If your responsibility is increasing, you need to make sure that everything is in place so that you will know what to do in a given moment. Every Monday or Friday, check what you should do and be clear on your goals. Through organization, you should be able to focus on a specific task.

Imagine if you don’t organize your task. You will virtually sit in front of your computer all day browsing since you don’t know which task you should do first.

• Talk

If the company size is shrinking in terms of employee population, don’t just lurk there waiting for job responsibilities. Speak up! Inform your boss and your fellow employees of what you think should be done to improve productivity even though the number of employees has significantly reduced. You should take this chance of showing your leadership skills or your ability to organize things.

But be prepared when you talk. Usually, you’ll be asked to do additional tasks because you have proposed something. Take this as a challenge as this will show your true personality at work.

• Rest

An increased responsibility will really give you a great deal of stress if you don’t know how to deal with it. At the end of the end, make it a point to rest. Leave the job at the workplace and go home to rest. This way, you can recharge and face the hectic tasks again the next day.

Don’t be intimidated with an increased responsibility. It’s your chance to show what you can really do for the company. If you’re successful in completing the tasks, career advancement could jumpstart faster.
