How to Handle Competition on Your First Job

Do not be surprised when at the first day of work, you realize that you are in a highly competitive environment. Everyone is aiming to become someone in the business and not everyone could get there.

No company will make everyone CEO at the same time just because they have ample experience. There has to be someone who will lead the group and people that will follow the leader.

But competition is not bad for the company. When there is a coveted price, everyone will be pushed to their limit and be as productive as possible. Although in the end you did not get the position, you have given a service above par from the company’s expectations. You have also picked up an idea or two on how to properly survive in your job and learn more.

On the other hand, do not think of competition as your life and death. It is just a competition and someone will move forward while others will just have to wait for their turn. Even if you lose, you still have improved into someone that could easily handle different asks later on.

Learning and Thinking

Competition should get the best out of you. Competition should push you to be more productive so that the company will recognized you as someone valuable.

If you are planning of destroying your competition through dirty tactics, here is a tip: don’t. Doing that will greatly ruin your competition. Besides, if you destroy your competition you don’t go out and claim that feat. Someone else could take over and will be even more difficult to challenge.

Instead of destroying your competition. Think really hard on how you can outdo your competitor in terms of being productive. Be very creative on what you have to do. Although it is not recommended to go crazy in your ideas, just make sure that you have enough creativity to show them what you have done for the company.

Fighting Back

One of common traits of fresh graduates in their first day at work is to yield to competition on the first day. Being someone new in the company does not mean you have to give in to everything they demand. You have to stand your ground face their challenges.

You have to be someone independent and could do your basic task without special assistance. Remember that you were hired because you have shown the skills and personality to be part of the company.

Extend Your Winning

A competition will always yield a winner and there will be a time that you are that winner. Instead of being bossy and brag about it, give credit to your competitors. Without them you were not able to bring out the best in you.

By now, you should have learned a lot from them and their techniques and protocols could be very useful for the company. Although you are still the winner, they are your stepping stone to success.

Always welcome a healthy competition in your business. You will learn a lot and improve considerably because of the challenges you will face at work.
